How to Boost Metabolism With Herbs

How to Boost Metabolism With Herbs

Are you looking for a way to boost metabolism? If you're metabolism is sluggish, it could really affect your ability to lose weight. There are many reasons why your metabolism can slow down. These include aging, stress, poor diet, lack of exercise and genetics.

The good news is that there is hope. You can boost metabolism naturally. You can help your metabolism by consuming herbs that help speed it up. These are gentler on the body than weight-loss supplements which typically overload your body with caffeine. The problem with those supplements is that the caffeine can harm your metabolism even more. Try these tips instead!

Things You'll Need:

Green tea (loose tea or bags)

Kelp

Mate

Ginger

Cinnamon

Cayenne pepper

Instructions

1

Green tea works because it is a thermogenic agent which means that helps you burn more calories above and beyond what you'd normally burn. If you are sensitive to caffeine you can use caffeine-free tea and it will still be just as effective.

2

Kelp helps boost metabolism because it contains iodine which is essential for the thyroid. This works especially well if you have a thyroid that is not functioning properly. You can either purchase kelp granules or use kelp (either the flakes or the whole plant) in the food you eat.

3

Mate is another herb that people use for energy and since it has only a small amount of caffeine, it is good for people who are sensitive to caffeine. Most supermarkets sell mate tea, or you can visit your local health food store. You can find the tea online as well.

4

Ginger, cinnamon and cayenne pepper are all herbs that have a thermogenic effect just like green tea. However, they should only be used in small amounts. Try to cook every day with at least one of these herbs. For example, you can sprinkle a small amount of cayenne in a stir fry, make a marinade with ginger or sprinkle some cinnamon in some oatmeal.

Tips & Warnings

Exercise and eat right to help boost metabolism even more.

Find new ways to cook with herbs to add variety to your diet and increase the nutritional value of the food you eat.

If you have a serious health problem, you may want to consult with your doctor or nutritionist before making changes to your diet and lifestyle.

How to Boost Immune System Function With Herbs

How to Boost Immune System Function With Herbs

Do you get sick a lot? If this is the case, your immune system could use a boost. With cold and flu season approaching, I am going to take extra special care that I feed my body a balanced diet, exercise, and take herbs to help strengthen my body against attack.

But which herbs are the best? Here is some advice that will help you make some choices.

Things You'll Need:

In order to help boost your immune system, you will need to choose the right herb from the descriptions below.

You can choose to take these herbs in capsule form (follow the instructions on the label) or as a tea (add 1 cup of hot water to 1 tsp of the dried herb, or one tea bag)

If you decide to take the herb as a tea, drink two to three cups per day.

Here is some advice to get you started:

1

There are some herbs called adaptogens that work to bring your body back in balance. They help your body adapt to the stresses of every day life which helps strengthen the immune system. Adaptogenic herbs include ginseng, shiitake mushrooms, reishi, ashwaganda and astragalus.

2

Garlic is one of those herbs that can be used in cooking. It helps your body deal with infection and also has some Vitamin C and quercetin--antioxidants that can help your immune system.

3

Simple tonic herbs also help strengthen your body and make it healthier. These herbs are best taken in tea form. Try stinging nettle, oatstraw, lemon balm and mullein. When your body is healthy, the immune system can do its job.

4

I've only recently started to take sage seriously as an herb that can be very helpful at dealing with infections. It's an herbal antibiotic and is also very useful during flu season because it can help with coughs, sore throats, and even fevers. Keep this herb around and drink two to three cups of tea a day when those around you seem to be getting sick. Sage may just prevent you from getting it.

Tips & Warnings

Make sure that the herbs you use are a high quality and that you got them from a reputable source.

Talk to your doctor about any herbs you may be taking.

Research the side effects just in case your doctor missed anything.

How to Blend Your Own Anti-Stress Cup of Tea

How to Blend Your Own Anti-Stress Cup of Tea

Homemade herbal tea is one of the things that helps me get through the stressful times. I've found that since we lead stressful lives, we need to take the time to relax. I like to handle my stress gently - with exercise, diet, and gentle herbal teas.

I have found that drinking a cup of relaxing herbal tea each night can really help. There are certain herbs that can help promote sleep and are also not habit forming like prescription sleeping pills are. Feeling relaxed and sleeping enough are both essential to keep the stress levels in check. Here's how you can make a cup on your own.

Things You'll Need:

Chamomile, lemon balm, oatstraw, passion flower, stinging nettle or any herbal blend that is said to promote relaxation

A pretty mug

Boiling water

Instructions

1

Choose the herbal tea that you want to drink. To start with, you can pick from the list at the top. Those herbs are all of my favorites. I would try each herb individually at first.

2

Bring water to a boil in a stainless steel saucepan. Place the tea bag in your mug. If you are using loose tea, place it in a tea strainer (follow the instructions on the package for your tea strainer).

3

Let the herb steep for 3 to 5 minutes. Remove the tea bag or leave it in while you drink it if you want something stronger. Oatstraw and chamomile are two herbs that can be left in the mug for a while.

4

Sweeten as desired. You can also add milk. Play some relaxing music or read while you sip your tea.

5

Once you get to know the herbs individually, you can start to combine them. I would start combining them in pairs. Stinging nettle and oatstraw, for example, combine very well together. You can also try lemon balm and nettle, chamomile and oatstraw, or passionflower and chamomile. As you become familiar with the paired combinations, you can blend them as you see fit.

Tips & Warnings

Try a different herb each night to see which one you like best.

Let your taste buds rule your choices. Which herbs taste the best to you?

Research the herb to make sure it's right for you.

Consult with your doctor before trying anything new. Remember, just because it is natural doesn't mean it is safe.

How to Become a Phrenologist

How to Become a Phrenologist

Phrenology is based on the idea that there is a direct correlation between the bumps and indentations on the head and a person's character traits. The thought is that the areas of the brain that are frequently used grow larger. A phrenologist is trained to understand where traits correspond on the surface of the head and how to analyze data found after an examination.

1

Understand that phrenology is not practiced as a sole profession anymore; however, some of the underlying principles of phrenology are applied in the medical field.

2

Practice phrenology by knowing the 21 faculties (personal characteristics) and where each faculty corresponds on the head. Faculties are broken down into four main categories: love, morals, intellect and energy.

3

Examine the head for bumps and indentations. The size, shape and location of the bumps and indentations are believed to directly correspond to the personal characteristics (faculties) of the individual.

4

Find a plaster phrenology head to use for locating the faculties on the skull. The most recognized brand of this phrenology tool is the "Fowler" model. Not commonly produced today, the phrenology head is found mostly in antique shops or specialty manufacturers like The London Phrenology Company.

Tips & Warnings

Upon purchasing a plaster phrenology head for personal use, be wary of unknown manufacturers. Some impostor phrenology heads are imprinted with the faculties in the wrong location. Check the head with a chart or compare with a picture of a trusted phrenology head, the "Fowler" model.

A phrenology reading can be erroneous if the phrenologist does not conduct a thorough exam, the subject has severe brain damage or a misshapen head due to an accident. Any significant psychological disorder can cause a bad phrenology reading as well.

How to Make Woven Wire Jewelry

How to Make Woven Wire Jewelry

Woven wire jewelry looks beautiful and can be fashionable as well as antique in appearance. What is wonderful is that this jewelry is easy to make. Head to your nearest jewelry supply company and have some fun creating your own works of wearable art.

Things You'll Need:

16 gauge wire of your choice (gold, copper, silver)

Tape (masking works best)

Clamp

Needle-nosed pliers

Wire cutters

Step
1

Cut three pieces of wire into 20-inch lengths.

Step
2

Hold the wires so they lie side by side, and bend the wires at their center so that they cross each other. The point below where the wires cross should look like a curve. Bend the wires with your fingers or needle-nosed pliers.

Step
3

Wrap the curved portion of the wires in masking tape, and secure it in a clamp.

Step
4

Straighten the wires outside the clamp (the clamp should prevent the curve from becoming undone) and divide them into three sets of two.

Step
5

Braid the wire pairs together to the bracelet's desired length, and fashion a hook at the end by twisting the ends together with needle-nosed pliers. Cut any uneven lengths and file the ends down until they're smooth.

Step
6

Experiment with the wire to create different designs. Instead of braiding the wires together, twist the left and middle pairs of wire together twice before incorporating the third pair, or add colorful beads or charms. Create different clasps by adding a smaller loop or using necklace clasps. Let your own imagination be your guide.

Step
7

Make matching necklaces and earrings by using varying lengths of wire.

Step
8

Finish your woven wire jewelry by placing it in a tumbler overnight. This will give it a polished appearance.

How to Make Tulle Skirts

How to Make Tulle Skirts

Tulle skirts are a form of tutu that is among the easiest type of skirt to make yourself. You'll simply need to shop for the right fabric and learn a few tricks to give the finished skirt the stylistic flair you prefer.

Things You'll Need:

Tulle fabric

Ribbons

Needle

Step
1

Plan to make your tulle skirt by hand. Many sewing pundits find that tulle fabric gets caught up in the pin mechanism of a sewing machine far too easily. Making a tulle skirt is essentially as simple as forming a waistband and attaching any accessories to the fabric.

Step
2

Pick up approximately 10 yards of tulle material from your local fabric store. There are, in general terms, two types of tulle fabric: heavier and scratchier, or lighter and softer. Opt for the latter.

Step
3

Purchase about 1 yard of satin ribbon that's at least 2 inches in width. As an alternative to satin, you can buy grosgrain ribbon instead.

Step
4

Leave the tulle fabric folded in half (it usually comes folded) to create an extra-puffy look. If you don't want such a puffy skirt, unfold the fabric and cut it according to the desired size.

Step
5

Gather the tulle, forming a loop that will serve as the skirt's waist. The length of the edge you gathered should roughly equal the waist measurement of the person who will be wearing the skirt. Allow an extra half-inch in length for a regular-fitting tulle skirt, and add 1 extra inch to make skirts that have a bustled, billowy effect.

Step
6

Fold the ribbon in half. Iron it crisp. Fold the ribbon along the edge of the tulle you just gathered to form the waistband and secure it in place using pins.

Step
7

Sew the ribbon into place using a top-stitch, closing off the gap between the ribbon and the tulle. Secure the ribbon by sewing its bottom edge to the tulle, too.

Step
8

Use the loose ends of the ribbon to tie the skirt into place around the wearer's waist.

Tips & Warnings

You can give tulle skirts a bustled effect by sewing hooks and eyes over the ribbons to secure them in place permanently, rather than leaving them hanging to serve as drawstrings.

It is possible to make a tulle skirt for about $20 or so.

Perform a test beforehand to see if the person you're making the skirt for has any reaction to tulle fabric. It has been known to cause minor skin irritation in some people.

How to Make The Perfect 'Beach Skirt'

How to Make The Perfect 'Beach Skirt'

This is an awesome idea for anyone that spends a lot of time on the beach, the pool or on a boat. This is a great alternative to just wrapping a towel around your waist (and then messing with it all day).

Things You'll Need:

A great looking beach towel.

Two buttons

Step
1

I came up with this idea a few years ago (before children) when I was spending countless hours boating on the lake. It's such a simple idea that only takes a few minutes. To get started find a good quality towel that looks great with your bikini.

Step
2

Now, holding the corners of the towel in each hand, wrap the first corner around the front of you. Holding this corner at a comfortable position on your waist, mark the inside of the outer layer where the corner meets.

Step
3

Then, holding that corner in position, wrap the other corner over the top, as you would if you were going to wrap a towel around your waist. Holding that corner in place, mark the layer underneath where the corner meets.

Step
4

Now, attach your buttons where you've placed your marks and cut small slits (button size) at the corners of the towel. If you would like a sexier look, cut the towel of short. If you cut it at the middle, you could have two 'beach skirts' by adding buttons to the piece you cut off.

Step
5

You can still fold the towel over at the top for a natural look, but the buttons keep the towel from continually falling off throughout the day.

Tips & Warnings

For a finished edge at the bottom, you can cut the towel prior to adding the buttons, and use the cut edge at the top, leaving the original hem at the bottom.

You can also add your own hem at the bottom, by just folding the towel over and sewing it across, or use a piece of scrap material around the bottom for a more custom look.

You could also use the piece from the bottom by turning it over and using the reverse side as a bottom hem, or if you're real crafty, you could add a few pockets to the front and/or back!

How to Make the Equestrian Style Wearable

How to Make the Equestrian Style Wearable

Do rolling hills and galloping
horses
catch your fancy? Perhaps you admire the clothes English horse riders wear, but have always wondered how you could capture their style without paying stable membership. The look you want to achieve is that of an English countryside aristocrat. Here's how to make the equestrian style wearable outside of rural settings:

Step
1

*Choose classy colors: Keep your color palette subtle and sophisticated with a mixture of darks and neutrals. Navy, black, burgundy, gray, white, ivory, dark green, antique rose, and various shades of brown (from beige to camel to chocolate) are classic choices. These colors all match each other very well. A few combinations you may want to try: black and white; ivory and dark green; antique rose and burgundy; and camel and chocolate. Steer clear of tropical brights and fluorescent/neon colors. Pastels should be worn sparingly, if at all, and avoid pairing them with black.

Step
2

*Search for the right tops: Collared shirts with pastoral-themed patterns are ideal. Horses, roosters, and wildflowers are examples of the types of patterns you should wear. The patterns should be subtle, just small to medium sized. For a less blatant equestrian pattern, try plaid. Fitted cardigans with a little bit of stretch (look for spandex or lycra in the list of materials.) You can layer the cardigans over printed blouses or ribbed tees or camisoles. Tunic sweaters to wear over collared shirts are another pretty option. Also shop for tailored blazer-cut jackets. Fabrics like corduroy, wool, and velvet are best for these jackets.

Step
3

*Find flattering straight-leg pants: Well-tailored jeans, khakis, and corduroys are the perfect pants. Try leggings, too (just be sure to wear a longer top over them for extra coverage.) The trick to a stylish fit means finding something that's fitted in the thigh, but not tight. The seat should hug your bum, not form a wedgie. Back pockets are advisable if you have a flat bum and want to create the illusion of having a fuller bottom. Short pants, like capris, high waters, and shorts, don't work into the style.

Step
4

*Wear simple, elegant jewelry: Horse-head and horseshoe charms are stylish and quaint. Look for necklaces, bracelets, earrings, and rings. Lockets in classic shapes like hearts or mini boxes are pretty, too. Also consider wearing elaborate belt buckles to pair with leather belts. Plain gold or silver studs and chains belong in your jewelry box.

Step
5

*Sport pretty boots: Look for sleek leather or suede boots that reach at least mid-calf. What you want to avoid are grungy stable-hand boots. For a more modern take, you might try taller Ugg boots in camel or charcoal. Always pull the boots over your pants to show their full length. If you would prefer not to wear boots on certain days, you can also search for loafers, moccasins, or printed tennis shoes.

How to Make T-Shirt Transfers

How to Make T-Shirt Transfers

T-shirts are a very comfortable and popular choice for a lot of individuals. You can display your own style and creations on a T-shirt by making your own transfers. The easy to follow steps presented here will guide you through making your very own T-shirt transfers.

Things You'll Need:

Computer

Printer

T-shirt

T-shirt transfer paper

Picture or design

Graphics application

Step
1

Match the color of transfer paper to the color of T-shirts you purchase. You have the option of either light or dark transfer paper, so be sure to get enough of the correct one to go along with the color and amount of T-shirts you have.

Step
2

Wash and dry any T-shirt that you will be using to allow it to shrink prior to applying your transfer.

Step
3

Open a blank page in your graphics application. Name and save your design, allowing you to keep a copy of it and make changes to it as you go.

Step
4

Create your own personal design. You can let your imagination go wild and add whatever you like to your T-shirt design. Use actual pictures, clip art, words or symbols and tinker with the options, like framing the design with a pattern, adding or changing colors or whatever suits your taste.

Step
5

Print your T-shirt transfers. Make sure you follow the directions that come with the T-shirt transfer paper for proper loading of the paper into your printer. Print your T-shirt transfers and allow them to thoroughly dry prior to placing them on your T-shirt.

Step
6

Follow the instructions that come with your transfers to properly affix your design to the T-shirt.

Tips & Warnings

You can use specially-designed applications to make your T-shirt transfers, but you do not have to. Most word processing or picture editing software that comes with computers will work just as well.

When you are working with pictures and words, you may have to reverse them before you print them to allow the finished T-shirt transfer to be viewed correctly. It is a good idea to print a “test” copy first (of any design) if you are not sure how it will turn out.
