How to Become a Phrenologist

Phrenology is based on the idea that there is a direct correlation between the bumps and indentations on the head and a person's character traits. The thought is that the areas of the brain that are frequently used grow larger. A phrenologist is trained to understand where traits correspond on the surface of the head and how to analyze data found after an examination.

1

Understand that phrenology is not practiced as a sole profession anymore; however, some of the underlying principles of phrenology are applied in the medical field.

2

Practice phrenology by knowing the 21 faculties (personal characteristics) and where each faculty corresponds on the head. Faculties are broken down into four main categories: love, morals, intellect and energy.

3

Examine the head for bumps and indentations. The size, shape and location of the bumps and indentations are believed to directly correspond to the personal characteristics (faculties) of the individual.

4

Find a plaster phrenology head to use for locating the faculties on the skull. The most recognized brand of this phrenology tool is the "Fowler" model. Not commonly produced today, the phrenology head is found mostly in antique shops or specialty manufacturers like The London Phrenology Company.

Tips & Warnings

Upon purchasing a plaster phrenology head for personal use, be wary of unknown manufacturers. Some impostor phrenology heads are imprinted with the faculties in the wrong location. Check the head with a chart or compare with a picture of a trusted phrenology head, the "Fowler" model.

A phrenology reading can be erroneous if the phrenologist does not conduct a thorough exam, the subject has severe brain damage or a misshapen head due to an accident. Any significant psychological disorder can cause a bad phrenology reading as well.
